Scanner technique

In the previous project, in the course of which the digitization of the source material was completed, various scanning procedures were applied to rare books. The best results were achieved by digitizing the original in colour (cf. example). In view of the complex nature of the material - imprints in various sizes, large size copperplates, tightly bound books - only the use of a digital camera could be taken into consideration. We used a digital colour video camera (Progres 3012 by Jenoptik), from which imprints could be digitized in high resolution at 300 dpi. Where imprints had already been filmed, the films were scanned in grayscale in order to preserve the originals and avoid re-filming (cf. example).  For presentation on the web the digital masters (TIFF) were reduced in size from about 20-45 MB to approx. 150kB (JPEG).
