Use of manuscripts and items from the special collections
Because of their unique character and, in some cases, fragile
nature manuscripts
and other items from the special
collections, especially artists'
books, are subject to particular conditions of use.
These restrictions are necessary in order to guarantee the
adequate treatment of unique and fragile objects which may
require cautious and complex conservation measures before
they can be studied by scholars.
Manuscripts, incunabula, artists' books and other items from the special collections may be studied only in the manuscript reading-room in the Bibliotheca Augusta. This reading-room is open to the public from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In order to allow due preparation time for the objects and to avoid unnecessary delay, it is recommended that users make written requests to the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections at least three days before they wish to consult a specific item. This application should clearly indicate the academic purpose as well as providing an outline of the topic under research.
