A New Biography of Martin Luther

I am writing a biography of Martin Luther that is to be accessible to a general English-speaking readership and based on sound scholarship. The results of recent research, both textual and archeological, offer a new perspective of his early years. I am balancing that perspective with more attention to his later years that are less well-known. I am attempting to reimagine Luther the person instead of Luther the “great man”, whether as hero or villain. That requires attention to all his relationships, to many of the 2000 letters in his correspondence, to the earliest editions of his writings and their reception, and to the historical and geographical details that are essential to recreating a life. A wide variety of sources must be consulted and the HAB offers access to most of them in one place.
