Rare books

Athanasius Kircher, Ars magna lucis et umbrae, Rome
1646. HAB, A: 94.2 Quod. 2°

The Herzog August Library owns more than 400.000 imprints from the period between 1450 and 1830. These holdings are preserved in three separate shelvings in the stacks which mirror the library's history: 130.000 items from the book collection of Duke August the Younger, the holdings of the library of the former University of Helmstedt and all the prints collected since Duke August's death in 1666, which are kept in the so called Middle collection today. The rare book holdings are continuously being augmented by antiquarian acquisitions. This particularly relates to German imprints from the 17th century purchased for the Collection of German imprints 1601–1700.
