Who can use the Herzog August Library?

  • the Herzog August Libary is open to use by everyone who is a registered user

  • after registration you can use the books from the open shelving in the Zeughaus and the Bibliotheca Augusta and

  • order up books from the stacks to the reading rooms in the Zeughaus and the Bibliotheca Augusta

  • you can also use the PCs, photocopiers, microform readerprinters and all the other library facilities

    You may only borrow books on a take-out basis if you are a resident of Germany or are affililiated with the library’s fellowship programme

How do I get a library card?

  • First you must pay a fee of 5 Euro which can be paid at the counter in the entrance area of the Zeughaus

  • Take the receipt and your valid passport to the reference counter in the middle of the hall

  • Either hand over the completed registration form (the PDF is here) or fill it out at the counter

  • If you are under age you will also need a statement of consent from a legal guardian (available at the reference counter or here as a PDF document)

What may I do as a registered user of the library?

As a registered user you may

  • use the books from the open shelving in the Zeughaus and the Bibliotheca Augusta

  • order books from the stacks to the reading rooms in the Zeughaus and the Bibliotheca Augusta

  • use the PCs, copiers, microform readerprinters and all other facilities of the library

Please carry your library card with you at all times inside the library and show it when requested by the staff.

 

What can be borrowed from the library?


Books kept in storage

  • As a general rule all works published in or after 1920 (exceptions are books in a bad state of preservation or belonging to special collections)

  • Loan period: 30 days

  • The loan period can be renewed twice, then you have to bring the book back to the library. If no other user placed a reservation on the book you can borrow it again immediately.

Books from the open shelving (plans of the open shelving in Zeughaus (PDF) and Bibliotheca Augusta (PDF))

  • As a general rule all works except reference works and Bibliographies

  • Loan period: 15 days

How can I order books from the storage to borrow them?

If you want to borrow a book from the storage you can order it via the online catalogue.

  • You will find a „Request“-Button next to the shelf mark

  • The books will be available for you 1-2 hours after you ordered them (if they are kept in the central storage; books kept in our off-site storage are delivered only twice a day)

 

Orders to the reading rooms

  • Books that can not be borrowed can be ordered to the reading room in the Zeughaus (second floor) or the Bibliotheca Augusta (ground floor)

  • Exceptions: the following materials can only be used in the reading room of the Bibliotheca Augusta: Bound newspapers and other large-sized volumes as well as items in a bad state of preservation, Manuscripts, Artist’s books and parts of special collections. As a general rule you should announce yor visit at least three weekdays before your arrival to our manuscripts and special collections department (Postfach 1364, 38299 Wolfenbüttel; E-Mail: auskunft@hab.de; Fax: +49(0)5331/808-165). Please inform us about your research project and mention which works you would like to see. If you want to see Artist’s books please give the names of artist and author, title and shelf-mark for each book. For further questions please contact the reference under +49-(0)5331/808-114

  • Please be aware of the different opening hours of our two reading rooms

How to order books to the reading rooms?

  • Via the online catalogue or

  • by using a special order form (available at the refernce counters, beside the Internet PCs and on other places all over the library)

Where do I hand in the order forms and when will the books be available at the reading room?

  • Please put the order form into one of the designated boxes (reference counter Zeughaus,  first floor Zeughaus, reading room Bibliotheca Augusta)

  • On weekdays the order forms are picked up from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm once every hour

  • If you like to see a book on saturday please hand in the order on friday before 2.30 pm, there is no book delivery on saturdays

  • The books will normally arrive 1-2 hours after you have ordered them

Where do I get the books ordered via the online catalogue?

  • The day you have ordered them or the day after the order (depending on the time you placed the order) at the loan counter on the first floor of the Zeughaus

  • afterwards: at the counter in the entrance area of the Zeughaus

When will the books be ready to be picked up?

  • Approximately 1-2 hours after the order

  • Exceptions: Books that are not kept in the central storage. Books from the off-site storage are normally delivered only twice a day (affected are books with shelf marks starting with 1.8° up to 53. Aus well as the groups Wb, Wc, Wg and Kreuder)

What else do I need to consider?

  • There is no book delivery on saturdays

  • If you like to see a book on saturday please hand in the order on friday before 2.30 pm

 

Return of borrowed items


Where and when do I return borrowed items?

  • At the counter in the entrance area of the Zeughaus during the opening hours of the Zeughaus

How can I renew the loan period?

What else do I need to consider?

  • If you do not return your borrowed books in time you will have to pay fines

  • Renewing the loan period via the online catalogue ist only possible if it has not been overlaid already

  • Renewing the loan period is not possible if another reader placed a reservation on the book
