Catalogue of Bordesholm manuscripts in the University Library Kiel

Cod. Ms. Bord. 72

In cooperation with the Kiel University Library

Manuscripts belonging to the Augustinian Canons of Bordesholm near Kiel will be described at the Herzog August Library according to the guidelines of German Research Foundation (DFG) in a project conducted in cooperation with the Kiel University Library. The aim of the project is to produce a modern manuscript catalogue in printed and web-based form. In addition a new method of registering watermarks will be tested.

In 1488, the Library of Bordesholm consisted of 529 volumes recorded in a medieval library catalogue At the time of the secularization of the monastery in 1566 the number rose to at least 650 manuscripts and prints. 139 manuscripts, mainly from the 15th century, are preserved in Kiel and 70 of these will be described over the next three years. The books provide important testimony of the monastic literary culture of the time in northern Germany.

All descriptions will be published online on Manuscripta Mediaevalia and in the manuscript database of the HAB on the basis of results from the Europeana Regia project and using the TEI-P5 standard. The identification and description of the late medieval bindings is being carried out in close cooperation with another project funded by the DFG, the Database of medieval and Renaissance binding stamps. Images of the watermarks are made with the innovative ATWISE camera using infrared (developed by Manfred Mayer, University Library Graz). The will be inserted into the Watermark Identification System WZIS.

An index of the manuscripts from this project cycle is available here.
