Emblematica Online

In Co-operation with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)

The collections of Emblem books of the Herzog August Bibliothek (HAB) and the University of Illinois (UIUC) level amongst the greatest collections of emblem books worldwide.

The HAB-UIUC cooperation project Emblematica Online aims to digitize, index and do research on emblem books as well as to develop structures and standards, which allow for joint access on both databases and which may serve as a prototype for similar image-text related projects in the humanities. Till 2007 the cooperation was financed by the Alexander v. Humboldt foundation, since 2009 jointly by the DFG and NEH ("Bilateral Digital Humanities Program"). By now about 800 emblem books are digitized, mottos transcribed, indexed with ICONCLASS notations and are available via the OpenEmblem Portal.
