Portrait Catalogue

The aim of this project was to reproduce and describe the portraits in the graphic arts collection of the Herzog August Library. The portraits are organized alphabetically according to the name of the person represented.

The description of each item gives biographical information first, followed by a description of the portrait, including its technique, information about the artists and the printers, measurements and bibliographical references. There is an index of artists and several other indices available.

50 volumes of the catalogue have appeared comprising 28 image volumes, 9 text volumes, 6 supplements of approx. 3000 portraits as well as 7 index volumes. The catalogue provides detailed information about more than 28.000 portraits from the 16th to the 18th century.
