Writing on Music in Enlightenment discourse

This project investigates the relationship of music to the movement which permeated all aspects of intellectual and everday life in the eighteenth century, known as the Enlightenment. What part did music play in this movement? What influence did the Enlightenment exert on music? The project focuses on the central media of Enlightenment discourse, the journal.
The project establishes a comprehensive bibliography of eighteenth-century journal articles, along with a description of their contents. The scope is limited to journals of the northern and central Germany between 1698 and 1798. All relevant articles will be catalogued and indexed by key words to include works, persons and places.
