Volume Five: 1639-1640. In more than 180 richly annotated
letters, supplements and illustrations, the latest
volume of the edition documents linguistic, literary
and cultural projects of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft
(Fructiferous Society) from the years 1639 and 1640.
At that time, a strong debate on the fundamentals
of German grammar centered in Deutsche Sprachlehre
(1641), a reference book by Christian Gueintz, the
director of the college in Halle. This effort was
also paralleled by creations of biblical poetry, harmony,
and translation, as well as discussions and outlines
of poetics. Among many other documents of literary
production and reception highlighted in the present
volume, Martin Opitz's critical edition of the Annolied
should be mentioned as a ground-breaking work in the
field German philology. The disappointing peace treaty
of Prague (1635) stimulated patriotic peace propaganda
in impressively staged recitations, such as Friedensrede
(1639 and 1640) by Diederich von dem Werder. The present
volume also contains a letter and illustrations from
the Tugendliche Gesellschaft (Virtuous Society), the
female counterpart of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft.
Detailed commentaries on the documents reveal a network
of little-known aspects of an already advanced period
of the Thirty Years' War, from its warfare and diplomacy,
as well as its religious, cultural and everyday life. IndicesYou will find cumulated indices of all published volumes by clicking here. In Preparation:Reihe I, Abt. A: Köthen, Bd.
