Catalogue of Hebrew imprints from the 15th to 19th century
Project description
The
Herzog August Bibliothek has around 400 Hebrew and Jiddish
imprints mainly printed in the 16th and 17th centuries. There
are approximately 270 Hebrew texts and 130 Judaica, mirroring
the relationships between Christians and Jews in the early
modern period. The collection includes prints from major centres
of Hebrew printing such as Venice, Prague, Basle, Amsterdam
and Cracow and documents some of the important printers in
the history of Hebrew printing. It contains various first
editions and unique copies. The project aims to catalogue
the imprints according to the Hebrew bibliography standard.
The cataloguing, which has now been completed, was undertaken
in co-operation with the Bodleian Library (Oxford), which
has excellent holdings of Hebrew imprints and the research
materials necessary to cataloguing.
