New Programme: "Digital Humanities": Doctoral and Post-doctoral Fellowships for the academic year 2012-2013

Within its own research and projects and digital editions the Herzog August Bibliothek has created innovative research infrastructures for the humanities in the fields of medieval and early modern studies. The library is now part of a large joint-venture project "Digital Humanities" funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Research and Culture and co-ordinated by the Göttingen Centre for Digital Humanities. Within this project the HAB can fund several fellowships in the academic year 2012-2013. The programme is open to all disciplines and is directed towards doctoral and advanced researchers from Germany and abroad. Applicants must be conducting a research project which relies on methods and techniques from the digital humanities (datbase-oriented studies, digital edition etc.) and is linked to the book or manuscript holdings of the Wolfenbüttel library. Applicants must be able to provide proof of experience in using computer technology in their research. The library will support fellows' projects with its own expertise.

Fellowships of between 2 and 9 months for doctoral students are € 1000 per month, for scholars who have already received their PhD the rate is either € 1250 (if fellows continue to receive full pay during their fellowship tenure) or € 1800 per month, plus a travel allowance to and from Wolfenbüttel. Fellowships carry a residence requirement and the library has its own housing facilities. Fellows are expected to contribute to the academic life of the library and participate in scholarly exchange. Lower Saxony Senior Fellows Programme
2011-2013 at the Herzog August Bibliothek
Selection for first cycle 2011-2013 completed

The State of Lower Saxony is funding a new international and interdisciplinary Senior Fellows Programme linked to the research profiles which the library has established in its own projects over the past few years. These include European cultures of knowledge in the medieval and early modern period and the history of institutions, politics and media and their continuities and discontinuities. Attention is focused on the relationship between power and authority and structures of knowledge in the context of the court, the church and the university and on cultural transfer and Europe in its global networks.

This new fellowship programme is addressed to experienced senior scholars both from Germany and abroad whose publications have made a significant contribution to current research and methodology in the above areas. Fellowships for the first cycle 2011-2013 were awarded in July 2011 by the library's advisory board. A list of the fellows selected can be found here.

Prof. Niekus Moore and Prof. Medick are the first two senior scholars who arrived in Wolfenbüttel.
