Artists, Scientists, and Philosophical Picturing in Galileo’s Europe investigates the role of printmaking masters, their materials and techniques, in producing new knowledge at the onset of the Scientific Revolution. The project examines intensive reciprocal collaborations between etchers, burin engravers, and woodblock cutters, and astronomers, mathematicians, and natural philosophers, in and between Southern and Northern Europe, from the late sixteenth through mid-seventeenth centuries. It explores how the material affordances, technical, chemical, and manual operations of printmaking techniques—particularly acid etching—essentially shaped and conditioned epistemic authority and emergent forms of knowledge. The project addresses a persistent scholarly tendency to efface printmakers or treat their technical intelligence as secondary to scientific authors and texts. Interweaving art history, the history of science, intellectual history, and religious history, this approach dissolves inherited hierarchies between artist and scientist.

My PhD project examines the materiality and transmission of images in alba amicorum in Europe between 1550 and 1700. Alba amicorum, also known as libri amicorum, friendship albums, Stammbücher, and Philothecas, were pocket-sized albums used mainly in Protestant Europe to collect inscriptions, mottoes, heraldic devices and illustrations from acquaintances since the mid-sixteenth century. Such albums originated as printed Bibles bearing handwritten entries popular among the Reformed academic circles in Wittenberg in the 1540s, and soon proliferated to other regions and professional groups, diverging in form as pre-bound blank albums, or as illustrated books interleaved with blank pages and empty heraldic shields for customisation. My research not only looks at what certain visual motifs mean but also how the choice of medium, colours, and ways of inserting images shape meaning. Many motifs appear repeatedly across different and geographically distant albums, drawing on familiar themes from mythology, vernacular sources, and emblematic tradition. This research also investigates how and why certain images were circulated in alba amicorum, and the layers of meaning attached to specific images during their reproduction and transmission processes.

I came to Wolfenbüttel for the first time in 2009 as a young doctoral student financed by the Rolf und Ursula von Schneider Stiftung. Professor Stolleis, my supervisor at that time, told me that all the books I needed to write a history of public law in the Early Modern Period would be found there. Actually, the library had still more to offer—a community of colleagues who share an enthusiasm for books and for the time to which these books belonged. Therefore I have come back here again, this time not from Frankfurt but from Tokyo, in order to study the sources which Hugo Grotius employed for writing De iure praedae commentarius. Duke August the Younger and his successors collected books beyond contemporary confessional borders. Their collection importantly includes works by Spanish theologians and jurists on which the young Grotius heavily relied. The dialogue between Grotius and those Iberian writers carries me to the East-Asian seas surrounding Japan, where the Dutch and the Spanish-Portuguese were competing for hegemony with jus naturae et gentium as their intellectual weapons. Duke August’s books allow me to look into the conceptual world upon the basis of which Europeans in the early seventeenth-century saw my country.

Wer oder was bestimmte, was wahr ist?

My research in the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel is focused on the socio-cultural history of the Ukrainian principalities of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the late 16th-early 17th century. In particular I am concentrated on the multi-culturalism and multi-confessionalism in the princes’ Radziwills Olyka estate. Located in the Volyn voivodeship Olyka majorat constitutes the physical and metaphorical borderlands filled with the controversial issues of the ever-changing loyalties and identities of the multi-cultural and multi-religious (and multi-confessional) political society.

The undergoing research is concentrated on showing how these borderlands shaped the complicated relationship between the patrons (princes Radziwills, who were converted Catholics) with their clientele – nobility and common people of Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish, Tatar origin, who were Orthodox Christians, Protestants of various denominations, Jews, Muslims etc.

A Star is Born: Johannes Kepler and the Supernova of 1604

Visible to the naked eye, the supernova of 1604 captured the imagination of early modern society. It soon became a source of controversy among stargazers, who clashed over the accuracy of their observations, the certainty of their calculations, and the validity of their views about the meaning and nature of the novelty. My research focuses on the supernova and the vast network of scholars across the Holy Roman Empire who discussed it in detail.

I am especially interested in the definitive account that Johannes Kepler wrote about the “new star,” De stella nova (1606), which brought together a broad range of ideas and observations collected at the court of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. Through a closer look at the work of Kepler and his contemporaries, I will provide the first full account of De stella nova, including the wide web of astrologers and astronomers who shaped it over the course of composition.
