You can be issued with books and media from two locations: the Zeughaus and the Bibliotheca Augusta. Books can be found in the open stacks or ordered from the closed stacks and then taken home as long as they are not works printed before 1920, manuscripts or special collections. Only residents of Germany, scholarship holders and guests are permitted to remove borrowed holdings from the premises. Modern printed works and media are issued at the information desk in the entrance area of the Zeughaus. Old printed works can only be viewed in the library’s reading rooms. The use of manuscripts, objects from the special collections and painter’s books is subject to special conditions and is limited to the reading room in the Bibliotheca Augusta. Please bear in mind that use of the library is restricted to people with a valid library card, which can be issued at the information desk or the lending desk. Staff at the information desk will be happy to help if you have any further questions.

In the ‘Download’ section you can find a variety of information on applying to join the library, utilising its materials and loan materials and using the online catalogue and inter-library loan system. Moreover, you can find a map of the two buildings which indicates the precise locations of our open stacks and the assorted technical facilities, as well as various application forms which you can fill out before your visit. In addition, this section contains a copy of the terms of use for state libraries and the schedule of fees for libraries run by Lower Saxony and university libraries.
