Wolfenbüttel, February 04, 2025

In his new artist book »Endloser Krieg/Endless War«, Meador addresses the Thirty Years’ War, combining historical analysis with reflections on the enduring impact of war up to the present day. During a three-week residency in Wolfenbüttel, Meador examined historical prints from the HAB collection, including portraits, landscapes, and allegories. The questions he explored during this process—such as “Who tells the story?” and “Which narratives are visible in the images, and which remain hidden?”—are highly relevant today and invite a fresh perspective on the depiction of war.

Clifton Meador combines writing, photography, printmaking and design to create artists’ books that explore the role that narratives about culture, history and place play in the formation of identity. Meador studied photography at the Rhode Island School of Design and Book Arts at Purchase College in New York. From 2014 to 2019, he served as Chair of the Art Department at Appalachian State University, where he is now a professor in the Graphic Design and Graphic Communications Management programs. Over the past years, the Herzog August Bibliothek has acquired several of Meador’s works, including Archeiropoieta (2020), East India Trade (2021), Dead Life (2022), Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (2022), and Peenemünde (2023).

The award ceremony and the presentation of »Endloser Krieg/Endless War« will take place on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 6:00 PM in the Zeughaushalle of the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel.
