In the cultural centres of the early modern period, libraries served as stores of knowledge as well as sources of reasoning for the spirited and passionate intellectual debates that took place in this era. As part of a programme carried out by the Interdisziplinäre Institut für Kulturgeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit (Interdisciplinary Institute for Early Modern Cultural History, IKFN) together with the Herzog August Bibliothek (HAB) in Wolfenbüttel, the graduate course has chosen to focus on this dynamic element of what appears at first to be a static institution such as the library. The 12 doctoral candidates taking their degrees at the Universität Osnabrück are working intensively with the HAB’s collections. Supervision is done in teams composed of scholars from the Universität Osnabrück and the HAB.

A joint graduate course of the IKFN at the Universität Osnabrück and the HAB, sponsored by the State of Lower Saxony
