My project investigates the phenomenon of European Petrarchism in the fifteenth century, with particular attention to the reception of Petrarch’s Latin body of works. It focuses on the production and circulation of apocryphal writings falsely attributed to Petrarch as evidence of the growing authority he acquired. These texts encompass a wide range of literary genres—moral dialogues, devotional prayers, short stories, and technical treatises— thus attesting to the breadth of Petrarch’s influence. The project aims to provide an updated census of the manuscript and printed tradition of the selected writings and a geographical mapping of their circulation, in order to identify the intellectual milieus in which they were produced and disseminated. More broadly, the study seeks to illuminate how spurious texts contributed to shaping Petrarch’s image in relation to his authentic works and the role they played the development of early modern European culture.
