This collection of essays explores the role of the arts within confessional negotiation processes. The transfer of images and architectural forms between Catholic and protestant cultures as well as the political contexts and reasons for these exchanges remain little understood. Therefore, the following questions are central to the present volume: What theological or political intentions motivated processes of reception and adaptation in the visual arts and architecture? How did the arts help to interpret the relationship between politics and religion, and how did they, as part of a textual and visual discourse, model the interrelation of spiritual and temporal power? Finally, to what extent was religious tolerance encouraged or undermined by such exchanges?
