Printing Imperial Splendour: Late 16th-Century Editions of ‚The Triumphal Procession of Pope Clement VII and Emperor Charles V After the Coronation at Bologna on 24 February 1530‘
This project aims to rethink the dating and authorship of the third edition of ‚The Triumphal Procession of Pope Clement VII and Emperor Charles V at Bologna,‘ originally by Nicolas Hogenberg. Previously, this edition was dated circa 1610 and attributed to Hendrik Hondius. However, analyzed examples show that the third edition was certainly published before 1592, probably around 1575–1592, when Hondius was too young to undertake such an enormous project. The main research objective is a detailed analysis of two copies of this work housed in Herzog August Bibliothek, comparing them to those examined in previous years (i.e., Berlin, Paris, Kraków, Nürnberg) to reveal the dates, dynamics, and possible actors behind printing imperial splendour with Hogenberg’s plates in the late 16th century.
