Academic Mobility at Helmstedt during the Thirty Years’ War: the Swedish Case

The aim of this project is to outline and foreground the importance of academic mobility for the history of the University of Helmstedt and, more generally, for the study of the networks of knowledge that connected the German-Baltic world during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-48). And within this scheme, the project pays close attention to the Swedish expansionism in continental Europe and its historical actors. The aim is to present three separate case studies taken from the fields of book collecting, cosmological or astronomical correspondence, and antiquarian studies. This project is in many ways a natural extension of my previous research, which was devoted to the reception of Aristotelianism at Helmstedt. At this stage, my research will result in new work on the Gothic antiquarian networks between Rostock and Helmstedt.
