Heinrich Grimm Complete Works Edition
As cantor—a civic position including roles as music director, composer, and educator—Heinrich Grimm (1592/3-1637) was an important figure in the musical, cultural, religious, and civic life of Magdeburg during the first half of the Thirty Years’ War; however, his career suffered insurmountable decline following the Sack of Magdeburg in 1631. His compositions are almost completely unknown today, and of the approximately 320 cataloged works—about half of which are extant in Wolfenbüttel—only a handful are broadly accessible. Through the Heinrich Grimm Complete Works Edition, Benjamin aims to make Grimm’s compositions available for students, scholars, performers, and audiences. This project is supported by the American Philosophical Society, the Furman University Humanities Center, and the Furman University Research and Professional Growth Committee.
