Works of sacred lyrics by the Baroque poet Johann Rist

A critical and annotated hybrid edition of two collections of sacred hymns

Johann Rist (1607–1667) was an extraordinarily productive literary figure and pastor based in the north German town of Wedel. He is regarded as one of most important religious baroque poets, ranking alongside figures such as Martin Opitz, Andreas Gryphius and Simon Dach. His extant oeuvre of published sacred works is more comprehensive and diverse than any other baroque poet in the German-speaking world.

Since 2010, critical editions have been produced of three large collections of sacred hymns by Rist in musical settings by Johann Schop, Heinrich Scheidemann, Martin Coler and many other leading north German composers. A bibliography of Rist’s collected sacred lyrics has also been published.

This collaborative project with the Universität Hamburg yielded two further highly influential corpora of texts and music by Rist and his composers as a hybrid edition with detailed comments: the Neue Musikalische Katechismus Andachten (1656) and Neues Musikalisches Seelenparadies [...] Neuen Testaments (1662), which were widely included in early modern hymnals.
