This project offers the first comprehensive analysis of the literary estate of Johannes Karg (1525-1588), better known under his latinized name, Parsimonius, a sixteenth-century theologian and abbot of the Hirsau monastery in the Duchy of Württemberg. Parsimonius’ versatile output, that also includes two world histories and educational texts for monastic instruction, has so far not been studied extensively. In particular his correspondence with leading theologians of the time, such as Jakob Andreae and Johannes Brenz, offers new insights into the study of Reformationera theological discourse. For example, Parsimonius played a significant role in the Augsburg calendar dispute and debates about Christ’s descent into hell. As part of the dissertation project, his literary estate will be comprehensively analyzed for the first time, with a particular focus on his correspondence.
